What is Metabolic Health and Nutrition?

It is the absence of metabolic disease, which means what? The well known NHANES study defined metabolic health as having ideal levels of blood sugar, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference, without using medications. These factors directly relate to a person's risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Did you know that a study in 2019 showed that only 12% of American’s are metabolically healthy?!?!

How can you determine if you are metabolically healthy or not?  Ask yourself these simple questions:
  • Do you weigh more than you would like?
  • Do you carry your weight around your midsection?
  • Do you have elevated blood pressure?
  • Have you ever been told your blood sugars are high or borderline?
  • Have you been told you have high cholesterol?
  • Do you take any medications for chronic disease?
  • Do you have a family history of a chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, HTN, Alzheimers, stroke, obesity, cancer)?
  • Do you struggle with erectile dysfunction?
  • Have you been diagnosed with PCOS or had fertility issues?
  • Do you have skin tags?
  • Do you have chronic pain?

If you answered yes to 2 or more of these, then you are likely included in the 88% of American’s that have poor metabolic health.

What can I do to improve my metabolic health or prevent poor metabolic health?

There are multiple options out there when it comes to making specific conditions better. For example, when a reasonably healthy, slightly overweight person comes in with HTN of unknown etiology, medical practitioners will most often simply start an antihypertensive medication to treat the blood pressure. We would like for you to rethink chronic diseases, these conditions are a “symptom” of underlying poor metabolic health. So for example, we can teat your symptom of high blood pressure with a pill or we can treat your metabolic health and the blood pressure will naturally come down with that intervention. The option we prefer is to discover why your metabolic health is poor and address it with lifestyle change so we no longer have to treat the resulting “symptom” with a pill.

Metabolic health is a “new” concept that is getting more and more attention as doctors become more and more frustrated with the traditional strategy of simply prescribing medications for diseases. We all know that we can improve our health with better lifestyle strategies. The biggest issue is that depending on who you ask, lifestyle intervention recommendations can vary drastically. One doctor will tell you to eat less and move more while another will tell you to eat plant based foods only and another will tell you to eat the Mediterranean diet. So what is the RIGHT answer? The RIGHT answer is the strategy that works for YOU!

The providers at Pelex are well versed and experienced at evaluating you as a whole and making recommendations based on what will be best for you. For example, a 65 year old morbidly obese female with DM, HTN, CAD, and hypothyroidism on 8 different medications will be recommended something very different from a 30 year old male who was recently diagnosed with HTN and wants to avoid all medications. Our medical providers have the ability to evaluate your lab work, conditions, medications and goals and customize a plan that works for you. And because we can use telehealth, we can provide you with the time you need to make sure things go smoothly and you have amazing success. All of this will be coordinated with your primary care physician.

Is your diet helping or worsening your menopausal struggles?

You will hear us  use the phrase “with menopause” instead of “through menopause” its because we technically never get out of menopause once it starts. Menopause is technically defined as the loss of menses, therefore it can be for the rest of an adult woman’s life.  And with this persistent state of menopause come several health concerns that occur with the decline in hormones. Many which we can combat with nutritional and lifestyle interventions.

Most women dread the time in their life when menopause starts. They anticipate hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog and weight gain – all the things they don’t want to experience. This is where the contemplation of HRT comes into play.

Are you an athlete that is just shy of reaching your goals, but cannot quite reach them?

While some athletes may search for the answers in their training sessions, believing that they must not be working hard enough, the solution often lies in their diet. If you’re not eating enough food or eating food lacking nutrients, your body cannot keep up with the demands required of it for your sport.

During your sport, do you ever feel faint or that you have no energy?

Food is fuel for your body. As such, if you give your body diesel when it needs premium grade gas, you can’t expect it to run smoothly. Especially for athletes, whether performing at a high level or simply recreationally, ensuring that you are eating both the right amount and types of food is essential for your health and performance on the field. Not only is it important to stay hydrated and eat a balanced meal before your sport, but recovery afterwards is often equally as important. The types of physical activity that a sport requires can drastically vary. For example, just like how athletes train and build muscle in different ways based on their sport, you wouldn’t expect a long distance runner and a football player to have the same nutritional needs. Therefore, it is important that you are fueling your body in the right way that will lead to optimal performance in your specific sport.

Managing this delicate balance can be extremely difficult and a bit daunting, which is why at Pelex we offer access to premier sports nutritionist providers who can cater to the individual needs of your sport and your body. We will help align your athletic goals with your nutritional needs, while also paying attention to diet preferences.
